Baratha Kumara Liyanege

A skilled artist, sculptor and designer, and a senior lecturer at the National design centre, Baratha lived all his life in what was earlier a quiet village Bokundara, now a busy town where he has his studio quietly working on his next creation.  Whilst his father and elder brother were well known artists from whom he received his love for art, he studied under the renowned artists R.M.S Ratnayake from whom he received the technical skills and the knowledge of traditional art.

Born in 1964 received his degree Bachelor of Fine arts in 1987 from the University of arts and performing arts. He was a lecturer at the Antiquities and replica centre,  Kadjugama,  and a visiting lecturer at the Katubadhda and Sri Jayawardenepura Universities.

With his technical skills and love for traditional art Baratha has many major works on public display including the Buddha statue at the Sambuddha Jayanthi Centre, statues of J. R Jayawardene (Sri Kotha), C W W Kannagara  and many other works such as the designs at Elephant Corridor Hotel.

Barartha believes in maintaining the purity of traditional art and dedicates himself in developing and maintaining the traditional art forms for future generations.
